Frequently asked questions
High ply or low ply?
The first decision to make is whether you need a high ply or a low ply cutter. Aeronaut only makes low ply and single ply cutters. As a generalisation, high ply cutters are used for high volume, low cost goods such as garments and upholstery where high accuracy is not required.
Low and single ply cutters are used for high-value, lower volume goods where greater cutting accuracy is needed. Low ply cutters can perform tasks such as marking, creasing, scoring, sanding and buffing which are not possible with high ply cutters or conveyor tables.
Low ply cutters are actually used for both low and high volume production, but are perhaps more suited to industries where high accuracy is required, and short runs, just-in-time production or one-offs are made. Our customers do cut multiple layers where the job demands it, but typically, most Aeronaut cutters only cut one layer of material at a time, which can be up to 20 mm in thickness.

Your process, our starting point
Aeronaut cutters, tables and consumables are configured to suit your vision. It’s why we start with what you want to fabricate and work it back to find the right flexible solution.
Rational Engineering
Fortunately, Aeronaut Automation began with a few metal working machines in the spare bedroom, and the first few machines we made were sent thousands of kilometres away.
Spare Parts
We’d rather your machine was working 100% all of the time than make a few dollars on a spare part, so we don’t scratch off or hide part numbers or paint over them as we’ve seen on other manufacturer’s machines.
The Fishbowl
Sooner or later, even the best machines will need some service or technical support. At Aeronaut, we have the “fishbowl.” Our programmers, service technicians and production manager are all in the same room, complete with a small test cutter.
Aeronaut Automated Blade Cutting Systems
Most technical textiles can be cut with rotary blades. It’s a fast and efficient method of cutting and gives excellent edge finish on most materials. Rotary blades come in sizes to suit cutting various levels of detail. Very small details are cut with a tangential or drag blade and some thicker materials are cut with a reciprocating or oscillating knife. Since Aeronaut also manufactures laser and ultrasonic cutters, we can give you the right advice about what cutting technology suits your work.
Quick-change tooling
With the exception of laser cutters, all Aeronaut cutters have quick-change tooling, either bayonet mount tools, loaded from above, or Cam-lock tools fitted from below the cutting head. Quick-change tooling means you can fit all the cutting, creasing, sealing and punching tools Aeronaut makes in a few seconds without fiddling with blades under the cutting head.
Single tool cutters
With the exception of laser cutters, all Aeronaut cutters have quick-change tooling, either bayonet mount tools, loaded from above, or Cam-lock tools fitted from below the cutting head. Quick-change tooling means you can fit all the cutting, creasing, sealing and punching tools Aeronaut makes in a few seconds without fiddling with blades under the cutting head.
Multi-tool cutters

With the Aeronaut cutter performing three times faster than hand cutting, the company had to put on two extra full-time machinists, as well as one casual, to keep up.
